Daniel Scocco over at Daily Blog Tips posed a great question earlier this week. What exactly is a blog? What is your definition? I actually have two definitions that I want to share. The reason I have two definitions is because I have my "before blogging" definition which is filled with stereotypes and other such nonsense and my "after blogging" definition which is much more accurate.
Before Blogging Ridiculousness
Before I started blogging I figured that blogs were run by guys who wanted to be journalists but couldn't really cut it in the big times. They had to blog in order to get what they wanted to say out to the public, otherwise it will never be heard. If it wasn't guys who pride themselves on their Pokemon collection then it was big businesses who just wanted to get inside information to the public as quick as possible.
After Blogging Honesty
Now that I have been writing for about 2 weeks I have come to find that blogging is a self-contained community that stretches around the world. Your blog is your window out to the world, so that everyone can see in to your hobbies, interests, and passions. Each blog has its own persona and mine is the nonsensical ramblings of the mind. This is one thing that interests me and now I get to share it with the world, and not only that but the world gets to comment and interact with me.
To me, a blog is a voice to the world and a place to let your ideas roam free. Even if I had no comments, I would still blog because it is a single place to put all of my ideas that won't get wet, lost, crumpled, torn, and possibly eaten by the dog.

You're absolutely right Sal. Your house can burn down tonight. Any work on the blog will still be there after the fire department leaves.
@writer dad: Let's not be too morbid shall we? : )
I started my blog in 2006, after first hearing about blogs in 1999. At first they seemed like another step towards the exhibitionist/voyeuristic society we seem to be living, but then they grew from ego-log to having interesting things to say.
It took me a while to discover my own interesting things to say, but now I believe blogs are real community builders in age where most home-based workers live in front of their computers.
Blogs are a great support system. You share victories and struggles. You can really honest because your just a name on the screen. Most folks don't know who you are.
I have learned a great deal from reading blogs. I love the connection I feel when discussing things with the other folks out there.
I used to be very active in the Montreal BBS scene back in the late '80s. It was just a great place to 'meet' new people, share your life experiences and just chill out with them. Today's blogs are very reminiscent of those days. Let's me vent my over productive mind!
@Alex: You make a good point, blogs are a very social creature now. At first they were just intended for information or to stroke someone's ego. I guess that is why I was so turned off by them to start. Now we must make sure that we, as bloggers, much like journalists must keep the facts concrete and not let it turn into a social club.
@Laurie: That is the nice thing, to most people you are just a name and that lets the atmosphere be much more opened than otherwise.
@urbane lion: Right on! It is a great place to vent, and I love the tag-team duo of you and panther. My wife and I are hooked!
